Pasture-Raised Chicken

The way chickens should be raised…

100% of our chickens’ time is spent on pasture. We do not confine them at all, except for the first 10 to 15 days of their lives where they are kept warm in the brooder, which by the way, is also out on pasture. Watch the video.

Their feed stations are out on the pasture and the chickens are free to come and go to the feeders any time they want. Chickens are protected from predators by the watchful eyes of our Livestock Guardian Dogs.

Unlike other chickens that get very little exercise and are constantly eating prepared feed, our chickens are a slow growing variety, are not confined to the vicinity of their feeders, and get lots of exercise roaming the pastures.  As a result, they are harvested after at least 4 months of age which results in a much firmer and flavorful meat.  You may notice our chicken is very different from the young 6 to 8 week old chicken you have eaten in the past.

Seasonal: We only raise chickens from June through October. When our inventory of frozen chicken runs out in the winter, we won’t have chicken again until the following Summer.

Breeds: Heritage Buckeye.

Feed: Pasture grasses, weeds, and insects plus locally produced, certified organic, non-GMO, soy-free and corn-free feed.

Nutrition: Our chicken tested 4 times higher in essential Omega-3 fatty acids than organic free-range chickens from high-end grocers.

How to buy: Our chicken comes frozen and packaged in a shrink plastic bag.  While in stock, individual whole chickens are available at the Farm Store, Concord, and Mountain View Farmers’ Market locations and can be ordered online.  Watch our website for availability.

No hormones or routine antibiotics – ever!
